The eve of the Gold Coast Show public holiday, Thursday 28th August, saw quite a different night @ elsewhere and the room filled to the brim with visitors eager to see what the night would bring. Pase Rock (Spank Rock, USA) stopped in at elsewhere bringing with him a vinyl platter of guest DJs!
We had Royale Sunday DJ, Dan Mumbles, followed by Sampology (bris) who both showed the crowd what funk/hip hop is all about! Two amazing sets with a distinctly new sound and interpretation of hip hop today. OH SNAP! (USA) (the latest signing for Sweat It Out records - AJAX's new label venture) made quite an appearance delighting the crowd with "kick my own ass" lyrics - his only Queensland show before launching his new EP on tour with AJAX!
Pase Rock proved that he is one hell of a party starter, with hardly a spare square left on the dancefloor as guests enjoyed the hip hop beats and old school breaks.
Surecut Kidsfinished up the night with a host of 90's classics scratched into today's tech beats.
On Saturday, 9th August elsewhere teamed up with MTV to host the Gold Coast finals of MTV Kickstart - a national initiative to assist aspiring and independent artists by giving them all the tools necessary to break into the music industry. 5 finalists had been selected to battle it out LIVE @ elsewhere for their chance at a spot in the national finals - BoWsER, The Murderettes, Panther DLX, The Moderns and Elke.
When the doors opened at 7pm there was a line of excited fans half way down Cavill Avenue!! Band groupies and lovers of live music alike were out in force to catch another LIVE performance at elsewhere. The bands kicked off at 8pm, having only 2 songs to impress the judges.
The boys provided 5 amazing performances - pure rock, indie punk, electro indie, indie rock and new wave. With slightly different styles there was something for everybody and the audience certainly seemed receptive; with hundreds of guys rocking out and even more girls screaming as the bands hit the stage!
With half an hour of deliberation the judges - Susie Patten from band I Heart Hiroshima, Shaun Wilson from Radio Metro, Sam Cleveland from The Gold Coast Bulletin and MTV Marketing Manager, Sam Coombes - the announcement was made...... "The winners of the MTV Kickstart Gold Coast heat is Gold Coast rockers...... The Moderns"
Samuel, Andre, Willi and Swanny will now head down to Sydney in September to battle city against city during the Kickstart Final. There is no doubt that the boys will do the Gold Coast proud! Congratulations go out to the winners - as well as to the other four finalists; BoWsER, The Murderettes, Panther DLX and Elke. Thank you for making it an amazing night and showing MTV what the Gold Coast has to offer!
